This new Volvo FH13 6×2 tractor unit recently delivered to Smith’s Mechanical Services of Bridgend is described as being ‘the perfect match’ by company director Simon Griffiths.

The reason, says Simon, is that not only is it ideally matched to the four-axle Faymonville Mulitimax trailer its coupled to, but it is also particularly suited to the heavier work now being carried out by the family business.
Supplied by Volvo Dealer Truck and Bus Wales and West, the 80-tonne capacity STGO Category 2 tractor unit is the first new Volvo to join the Smith’s fleet. Simon Griffiths says he was favourably impressed by the appearance of the FH Volvo and that the driver liked the amount of space available in the tall ‘Globetrotter’ cab.
“These factors combined with an attractive offer and the necessary technical support from the dealership helped to clinch the deal,” said Simon. Power comes from a 13-litre 540hp Volvo diesel and the new FH has a manual gearbox instead of the more commonly specified I-Shift automated version. This was apparently the preference of the regular driver who believes that a manual allows greater control at slow speeds. The ‘Globetrotter’ cab features a single bunk which gives more space for the driver and was specified with a rear window, a non-standard item often specified in heavy haulage vehicles. Colour-coded mirrors and front bumper ensure a modern, stylish finish. “So far everything looks good,” said Simon. “Driver feed-back is very positive with comments such as ‘very comfortable, plenty of power and an all-round nice drive’. Not only that, but the truck really looks the part,” he added. The new Volvo FH-540 tractor unit and extendible Faymonville trailer (which may be stretched to give additional 6.6-metres of deck space) will be used to move loads of up to 55-tonnes and add a new dimension to the Smith’s Mechanical services operation.
