Smiths Mechanical is a family business run by John, Sharon and son Simon Griffiths.
John started his working life as a fitter for a crane repair company called Smiths Enterprises. It was based on Tower Close on the Bridgend Industrial Estate. After working for them John and Sharon decided to go it alone, setting up their own crane repair company on the driveway of their family home in 1991. In 1992, the Tower Close building came up for sale, and the Griffiths family purchased it. Rather than rename the business and confuse Smiths Enterprises customers, the decision was made to call the new company Smiths Mechanical Services. Initially it specialised in crane, truck and plant repairs, but gradually more strings were added to the bow – including an MOT bay, a Stoneridge tachograph centre and a Fassi crane franchise. In 1998 an opportunity arose to open up another depot in Johnstown Carmarthen. This enabled Smiths to cover the majority of South and West Wales. Smiths purchased a low-loader to collect and deliver customer’s vehicles. Due to increasing demand for haulage, they realised that there was an opening within the market. This spawned the birth of the heavy-haulage division; SMITHS HEAVY HAULAGE Smiths Mechanical Services Ltd has become a household name throughout South and West Wales |
